Transformative Volunteerism: An Inventory of NGDOi Volunteers’ Motivations

Abstract

This study is focused on the analysis of the motivations of so-called “transformative volunteerism” (Author 2008) within the context of non-governmental development organizations (NGDOs). This type of volunteerism attempts to raise awareness among citizens of the Western world concerning poverty-related problems in developing countries. To that end, a questionnaire was created and validated using previous categories proposed by Clary et al. (1998) and Chacón et al. (2010). The questionnaire was administered with a sample of 376 individuals who conduct volunteer work in three Spanish NGDOs that perform activities in Development Education. The results obtained contribute both to validating the volunteer motivations inventory stemming from these previous studies and to creating three new motivational categories inherent to the motivational reality of the Spanish NGDO sector. This contribution will enable such organizations to develop specific strategies for attracting and training volunteers who are willing to become long-term participants in such NGDOs.
