Authoritarianism and necropolitics in Lebanon: how corrupt elites destroyed their treasured democracy
Date:
2020-12-14Abstract:
This monograph explores the rise of authoritarianism and necropolitics in Lebanon, examining how corrupt political elites have undermined democratic structures and socio-political stability. It delves into the confessional political system, the sectarian dynamics that have perpetuated clientelism, and the role of Hezbollah in exacerbating the nation's governance crisis. The study argues that these power dynamics have led to widespread socio-economic collapse, weakened state institutions, and increased political violence. The authors critically assess the transformation of Lebanon's consociational democratic framework, highlighting the erosion of civil liberties and the manipulation of security forces to suppress dissent. The monograph concludes by questioning whether Lebanon can recover from its current state of authoritarian governance and political decay.
